Campus 101 - 🎓 Must-Know Tips for Enrolling in Classes at UCLA

In anticipation of a new academic year approaching, we will be starting a series of posts called Campus 101 in an effort to help new students - whether freshmen or transfers - navigate college life in LA.

To kick off this series, one of our UCLA alumni put together a fairly comprehensive list of the tips and hacks that he learned over the years that can hopefully make the enrollment process for new students to UCLA a smooth one!

📌 Enrollment & Scheduling Tips

• First pass is brutal. It’s the most competitive enrollment period, so have lots of backup classes ready. Expect not to get your ideal time slots or professors.

• Check Bruinwalk before enrolling in any class for reviews and previous grade distributions to determine if they record their lectures, if the class is easy, or if the professor is good

• Always double-check prerequisites. A class might look perfect in your schedule, but if you don’t meet the prereqs, you’re out. Prerequisites that say you need to be in a specific department may also be removed during second pass or a few days after second pass, so do your research if you really want a class!

• Check for enrollment holds. Missing Title IX training, unpaid fees, or other holds can block you from enrolling.

• Your UCLA ID number is the same number listed on your acceptance letter.

• If “The Staff” is listed as the instructor, it means the professor hasn’t been assigned yet—could be a new or unknown instructor.

• Final exam conflicts matter. Make sure your finals aren’t scheduled at the same time… or you’re probably cooked 🙁

📚 Academic Planning & Requirements

• Check what AP credits satisfy. Don’t accidentally take a class you already fulfilled (e.g. AP Micro satisfies Econ 1). 👉 https://admission.ucla.edu/admitted-students/ap-credit-the-college

• Start major requirements early so you can balance harder classes with GEs later and you can get easier GEs when you have better pass times as you get closer to graduating

• Switching majors within the same department is usually easy.

• Make a 4-year plan and be flexible. Use:

  • The current year General Catalog for your major

  • Your Degree Audit Report (most accurate)

🌍 Foreign Language Requirement Hacks

• The foreign language requirement is 3 quarters (Fall, Winter, Spring).

• Hack: A 9-week summer foreign language course can satisfy the entire requirement.

• Even more of a hack: take it asynchronously at a community college (just make sure it transfers 👀). Easy A potential.

🧠 Classes, Attendance & Professors

• Bruinwalk is essential. There’s even a browser extension that integrates with MyUCLA.

• If a class is recorded, still avoid scheduling another class at the same time—live attendance is often helpful.

• You usually can’t see syllabi before enrolling, unfortunately.

• There’s no central place to check grades. You’ll need to calculate them manually using your syllabus.

📖 Textbooks, Exams & Study Hacks

• Don’t buy textbooks immediately.

  • Ask your GroupMe

  • Check TA websites

  • Look for PDFs online (they almost always exist)

  • Check Bruinwalk or Facebook for used books

• Try to get old midterms from students who previously took the class with the same professor.

🎯 Enrollment Strategy Pro Tips

• It’s easy to drop classes within the first 2 weeks—so enroll in 4, attend all, and drop the one you like least (or keep all 4 if you can handle it).

• Upperclassmen can help you enroll. If they haven’t taken a class yet and meet the prereqs, some are willing to reserve it for you during their second pass, since they often have extra units to spare

• Fiat Lux classes: only take them if you’re actually interested. They’re usually easy 1-unit classes.

🧩 Clusters: The Real Deal for Freshmen

• Clusters can be hard, especially the first two quarters—but potentially very worth it. They are only available to freshmen, but some are historically pretty easy!

• Each cluster:

  • Is 6 units per quarter

  • Satisfies multiple GEs + Writing 2 (Writing 2 classes are usually very hard)

  • Can seriously boost your GPA if you get A’s

• Check Bruinwalk to see grade distributions before committing.

• Clusters fill up fast, so be ready.

• Once enrolled, you’re guaranteed a spot for all 3 quarters, which removes enrollment stress.

• Third-quarter seminars are much lighter (e.g. one easy 3-hour seminar/week).

• Make sure your cluster doesn’t overlap with major requirements.
